This is my daughter’s perspective on our family base camp trip to an island on Meeds Lake. You can also read her mom’s report.

Day 0. The Drive:

I woke up at 5:50 A.M.!! >:( I could not go to sleep in the car. CTG was soooooo annoying (I had to sit next to him). When we got to the bunk house I was happy. We went out to eat at Poplar House (I had been there before and I suggest it). The food was very good. We went back and went to bed.

Day 1. The Entry:

We got up, got ready, and we were off on the water. The first portage was fine, so was the second one (I had been on them before) but the third was not. It was VERY ROCKY!!!!!!!!!! The fourth one was not much better. Then we got on the lake that we were staying at, paddled up wind and got to are camp site and set up camp.

Day 2. The LEACHES!!!!!!!!!!!:

We went on a day trip to a portage. I wanted to swim (the swimming at are campsite wasn’t the best), the boys wanted to fish and my mom was going with the flow. So I went swimming. Before I went in I asked my dad what was the worst thing that could happen to me… He said “leaches.” So, not thinking they were so bad, I went in. Then I felt something slimy on my foot. I looked down and, you guessed it, it was a leach! I ran out screaming. My mom helped me deal with it. I went to wash my leg off and I noticed that what looked like small pine needles weren’t coming of and they were more leaches! Once we dealt with that we got in our canoes. We heard thunder so we got to a camp site to wait out the storm. I knew it was not going to rain but we played it safe. Then when we all knew it was not going to rain we went back to our camp and a fish dinner under our first sunset of the trip.

Day 3. The Rain:

I woke up. It was raining and all day it rained.

Day 4. Exploring the Campsite:

And that’s all we did (in a nutshell) then we had the best sun set of the whole trip and fish dinner.

Day 6. The LONG Portage:

We woke up, took 3 hours to pack up, and we were on our way to the first portage and last portage of the day. It was a mile, so I took my bag (that was 20 pounds) and a lot of loose items and led the way. Since I was the first one who started on the trail I was the first one who saw the water on the other side and, man, was I happy! I put my bag and stuff down, took off some layers, wet my hat, and I started walking back, passing every one who was behind me. When I got to the first side there were no loose items so I picked up my bag and started the trail again and, again, I finished first, so I took a snack break. Then CTG showed up (my annoying older brother). It took the rest of my family 40 minutes to finish!!!!! so then they did and we were on the water heading back to the bunk house. When we got to the bunk house I was sooooo happy. We loaded up and got lunch at My Sisters Place (I had been there before and I suggest it) then we finished up and drove some more before getting to our hotel (I had been there before and I suggest it) and that was that.

The End

If I had to describe this trip in one word it would be: Real
